Theatre sets and set design
Environment Design: The composition used in stage design inspired the way the environment was set out. The detailed backdrops combined with the simplistic set design were a big influence for my mind world design.
Lighting: I am wondering how far to go with the lighting. It doesn't want to be over complicated - it should just be a set of spotlights and a main light for each scene in the animation.
Lighting from theatre production influences the style and creates a big effect on the scene.

When building my backdrops I used inspiration from the wooden backdrops made in pantomimes and theatre productions. This image in particular inspired the idea of framing some of the scenes to feel like it was set on stage.
Theme Park Rides, Dark Rides.
In early development I did research into theme park attractions as I wanted the animation to feel like an experience. What better way to engage an audience with visuals than making the film like a ride.
The use of bright colours on a dark background was my original intent. However after realizing how uneconomical in terms of time this would be when rendering, I decided to just use inspiration from the ride experience and the colour pallet.
I focused on dark rides from Disney parks as they had a sense of magic and enchantment.
The Alice in Wonderland ride at Disney world has a very bright colour pallet.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit ride
Little Mermaid ride
Its a Small World After All
Alice in Wonderland
Each ride brings the film to life for the pleasure of the audience. I also did research into what makes dark rides work. It involves first picking scenes from the film that can be exaggerated to build an interactive story structure. The rides have animatronics of characters from the films. I decided from early on that I didn't want characters - I wanted to make the environment itself the character.
I gave my film certain situations for the audience to experience. First it was the classroom scene to show the stress and frustration of school and how anyone can relate to this. Then we break out into the dreams of the mind.

Dreams.
During early research on the project I did some study into the psychology of dreams. I studied them from my own lucid dreams whilst also studying the theory.
I learnt about the study of dream signs and what certain situations and symbols can mean about our minds and our current psychological state in life.
Lucid dreaming: This occurs when someone is aware they are in a dream and therefore now have control over their actions in that dream. This means you could conjure up objects, travel to locations, fly and so on. Over a period of time I have gained awareness of my dreams by first writing them down. This allowed me to gain more control over my dreams and also in a way, of myself as an individual.
Dream Signs: Over time I have studied my dreams to learn about my inner subconscious mind. Certain signs have repeated in my dreams which have opened up my way of thinking. e.g Lots of my dreams are usually set in rural locations, small towns, woodlands, exotic locations. I have some which are set in small houses at least small on the outside but big and complicated on the inside.
Even though these signs can still be open to opinion, it is fascinating to look for an explanation even if the facts aren't 100% correct. The subconscious is a complicated subject.
Forest
To dream that you are in or walking through the forest signifies a transitional phase. Follow your instincts. Alternatively, it indicates that you want to escape to a simpler way of life. You are feeling weighed down by the demands of your life. To dream that you are lost in a forest indicates that you are searching through your subconscious for a better understanding of yourself.

School
To dream that you are in school signifies feelings of inadequacy and childhood insecurities that have never been resolved. It may relate to anxieties about your performance and abilities. If you are still in school and dream about school, then the dream may just be a reflection of your daily life and have no special significance. Alternatively, a dream that takes place in school may be a metaphor for the lessons that you are learning from your waking life. You may be going through a "spiritual learning" experience.

Door
To dream that you are entering through a door signifies new opportunities that are presented before you. You are entering into a new stage in your life and moving from one level of consciousness to another. In particular, a door that opens to the outside signifies your need to be more accessible to others, whereas a door that opens into the inside, denotes your desire for inner exploration and self-discovery.

Room
To dream that you are in a room represents a particular aspect of yourself or a specific relationship. Dreams about various rooms often relate to hidden areas of the conscious mind and different aspects of your personality. If the room is welcoming or comfortable, then it signifies opulence and satisfaction in life. If you dream of being in a dark or confined room, then it denotes that you feel trapped or repressed in a situation. To dream that you find or discover a new room suggests that you are developing new strengths and taking on new roles. You are growing emotionally. Consider what you find in the discovered room, as it may indicate repressed memories, fears, or rejected emotions. Alternatively, such rooms are symbolic of neglected skills or rejected potential.
